Volunteer Application Guide

Uganda is one of the Countries that offers unique opportunities and experiences for volunteers coming from within Africa and other regions across the globe. The growing health care system, disease partners, climate, people and cultures all offer an exciting moment for volunteers to learn.

The Uganda-UK Health Alliance presents a fast and efficient platform for Health Care Professionals in the United Kingdom that are interested in having overseas volunteer placements in Uganda.

Follow the step by step guidelines below as you prepare to visit and volunteer in Uganda.

Step 1: Identify a Host Institution in Uganda 

Choose any institution of your interest from the list of host institutions below. In case the host institution of your interest does not appear on list, contact our Administrator on Email: solomon.talemwa@uukha.org for support and guidance. Be keen on the services offered at the institution and the location on the Uganda Map. choose one that fulfills your ambitions.

Step 2: Confirm interest to travel to Uganda

The Team at UUKHA is very excited about your interest to travel and volunteer in Uganda. This Confirmation helps us to initiate your travel and placement process. Send a confirmation message to the UUKHA via  solomon.talemwa@uukha.org and programs@uukha.org.

 Step 3: Assemble all the relevant documents

Make sure that all your travel documents are available and up to date.

Uganda has various Professional Regulatory bodies depending on your profession and these have requirements that you must satisfy in order to get a Temporary practicing license. Visit the website of your respective professional body and be sure you have all the documents. Scan all documents and save each of them as Pdf of less than 200kb

NB: All documents must be in English. In case you have your documents in any other language rather than English, contact the awarding Institution for translation to English.

For Doctors, Visit Uganda Medical & Dental Practitioners Council

For Nurses & Midwives, Visit Uganda Nurses & Midwives Council

For Allied Health Professionals: Visit Uganda Allied Health Professional Council

Step 4: Apply for a Tourist Visa to Uganda

Visit the Ministry of Internal Affairs – Directorate of Citizenship & Immigration Control Website

Take note that all Ugandan visa applications are done online.

Step 5: Submit all the relevant documents

Submit all the documents in step 3 to UUKHA via solomon.talemwa@uukha.org and programs@uukha.org

For Immigration clearance please prepare the following ; 

  • Passport copy (bio-data page)
  • Covering letter from the Agency (UUKHA will provide)
  • Recent Passport Size Photograph
  • Documents to support official status (UUKHA will provide these)
  • Professional registration certificates

Supported formats are: PDF, JPEG, PNG, BMP

Minimum file size is 5KB. Maximum file size is 250KB 

Please ensure to share all the above at least two months to your planned date of travel.

Step 6: Verification of submitted documents

The Team at UUKHA secretariat will verify all the documents submitted and respond to you within a 2 weeks’ time.

Step 7: Pay for Professional registration

Use the payment details provided at the website of the respective professional body and submit proof of payment. It’s after this confirmation that our team will initiate the processing of your professional practicing license.

For doctors please follow UMDPC Website for payment details.

For nurses and midwives please follow  UNMC Website for payment details after you have received feedback from the documents you submitted in step 5.

For Allied Health Professionals please visit the AHPC Website for payment details.

Step 8: Submit a copy of your Visa

Sharing a copy of your Visa with us helps the team to process a work permit for you. Remember that all UK Volunteers applying through UUKHA enjoy a waiver for the work permit processing fees.

Step 9: Receive your permit

Work permits are picked from the immigration office in person. On arrival to Uganda, pick your permit from Ministry of Internal Affairs office located in Kampala (headquarters) or upcountry offices in Jinja, Gulu and Mbale.

If all steps above have been strictly followed it will take you about 2-4 weeks to receive your work permit from the time all your  documents have been submitted to Ministry Of Internal Affairs.
