Kawempe National Referral Hospital (KNRH) is teaming up with the West Yorkshire & Harrogate Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS) for an ambitious project to enhance emergency obstetric and newborn care in Uganda. Supported by a grant from the Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET), this collaborative initiative aims to tackle high mortality rates in obstetrics and newborn care through an innovative simulation training curriculum.
Uganda, like many countries, struggles with high mortality rates in obstetrics and newborn care. Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, KNRH and LMNS are focusing on Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) to improve outcomes for mothers and newborns across the nation. This project seeks to equip healthcare workers with the skills and confidence needed to handle emergencies effectively, ultimately saving lives.
To launch the project, KNRH hosted a week-long inception event, bringing together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Health and various healthcare facilities in the Kampala Metropolitan area. These discussions and planning sessions aimed to build a strong foundation for the project and ensure alignment with national healthcare priorities.
At the heart of this initiative is a comprehensive simulation training curriculum for emergency obstetric and newborn care. Through hands-on training sessions and realistic simulated scenarios, healthcare workers will enhance their skills, improve their decision-making abilities, and gain confidence in managing obstetric and newborn emergencies. This practical approach is designed to prepare them for real-life situations, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
The success of this project depends on robust partnerships and collaboration between KNRH, LMNS, the Ministry of Health, and other stakeholders. By sharing expertise and resources, the project aims to create sustainable improvements in obstetric and newborn care practices. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of working together to achieve common goals in healthcare.
As Kawempe National Referral Hospital and its partners move forward with this project, their commitment to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes in Uganda remains steadfast. By investing in training, capacity building, and healthcare system strengthening, the project aims to reduce mortality rates and enhance the quality of care for mothers and newborns across the country.
