Uganda has taken strides in transforming the Health of its citizens through improved prevention, promotion, curative and rehabilitative services. Through consolidated efforts of development partners and the government, health indicators have improved significantly. For instance, Infant Mortality declined from 71 to 43 deaths per 1000 live births in 2011 and 2016 respectively. Maternal Mortality followed a similar trend declining from 438 to 368 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Despite the significant progress, Uganda still faces challenges in the various pillars of the Health Sector including Human Resources for Health. Almost all health facilities require an extra pair of hands to support the delivery of services.

Through professional exchange from the UK, many have volunteered in several Health facilities and programs across the country. These range from students, mid-level health workers to highly specialised cadres. The services rendered by these professionals to the respective host facilities are indeed invaluable.

On the other hand, the professionals mutually benefit from this clinical experience. The professionals learn from a wide clinical setting, acquire skills to practice in a resource-limited setting among others. To a personal context, a visit to any part of Uganda is a fascinating experience. The pearl of Africa is blessed with nature that includes breathtaking scenery, game parks, heritage parks and a very friendly people. Most of the professionals indeed end up making Uganda their second home.

The Uganda UK Health Alliance is committed to supporting UK professionals to have a smooth experience while volunteering in Uganda. Through our program on Human Resources for Health, UK Volunteers through UUKHA enjoy preferential treatments from the Ministry of Health including waivers of fees among others. The Uganda UK Health Alliance coordinates the process of Registration, in-country travels and stay at host facilities. We have assessed and partnered with several host facilities in every region of Uganda to ensure comfortable stay of Volunteers.

Our Consortium of Human Resources for Health further supports organisation that runs placement programs for the professional exchange to jointly work and foster shared learning in Human Resource exchange.
